00;00;07;20 - 00;00;08;01
from the
00;00;08;01 - 00;00;11;24
cam And then studios this is the kids
morning
00;00;11;24 - 00;00;14;24
news network
00;00;17;09 - 00;00;19;04
Good morning friends.
00;00;19;04 - 00;00;22;29
It's July 15th, 2024 and I'm Alex,
00;00;23;07 - 00;00;26;06
back in the Camden studio in New York.
00;00;26;06 - 00;00;28;09
Yes, I was sick most of last week.
00;00;28;09 - 00;00;30;02
Sorry to miss a couple of days.
00;00;30;02 - 00;00;33;07
Hopefully you'll listen to the shows
I reposted last week,
00;00;33;18 - 00;00;37;20
which were two interviews
with amazing kids.
00;00;37;20 - 00;00;41;13
If you didn't catch those, go back
and listen to last week's shows.
00;00;41;27 - 00;00;44;12
It's National Gummy Worm Day.
00;00;44;12 - 00;00;47;25
Supposedly,
gummy worms were invented on this day
00;00;47;29 - 00;00;52;17
in 1981 by famous gummy bear
candy company Haribo.
00;00;53;07 - 00;00;57;13
Now, this is going to surprise you,
but gummy worms are made
00;00;57;13 - 00;01;02;21
from the exact same stuff as gummy bears.
00;01;03;04 - 00;01;07;17
The same is not true for real worms
and real bears.
00;01;07;17 - 00;01;11;26
However, a 1,000 pound bear
made from the same stuff
00;01;11;26 - 00;01;16;06
as a worm would be yucky. Ill.
00;01;17;22 - 00;01;18;16
The Summer
00;01;18;16 - 00;01;22;00
Olympics begin next Friday in Paris,
France.
00;01;22;18 - 00;01;27;13
Officially,
these are the games of the 33rd Olympiad.
00;01;27;14 - 00;01;29;11
Only you have to write 33.
00;01;29;11 - 00;01;32;11
In Roman numerals x, x, x I.
00;01;32;19 - 00;01;36;23
Paris is the host city, but events
will take place in different locations
00;01;36;23 - 00;01;41;25
around France, and one event, surfing
will be on the other side of the world.
00;01;41;25 - 00;01;45;15
In Tahiti,
which is part of French Polynesia.
00;01;45;15 - 00;01;48;15
So it's partially governed by France.
00;01;48;16 - 00;01;52;04
The games in this year's Summer Olympics
include track and field events.
00;01;52;15 - 00;01;56;13
Some outdoor sports like archery,
rugby, triathlon,
00;01;57;03 - 00;02;00;21
water events like swimming, diving,
sailing and rowing.
00;02;01;10 - 00;02;05;15
Some martial arts
including boxing, judo and taekwondo.
00;02;06;08 - 00;02;11;06
Soccer, golf, horse events
And some newer events
00;02;11;06 - 00;02;16;04
like skateboarding,
sport climbing and breakdancing.
00;02;16;07 - 00;02;18;01
I think they're calling it breaking.
00;02;18;01 - 00;02;19;21
I hope nobody breaks.
00;02;19;21 - 00;02;22;24
There are actually 329
00;02;22;24 - 00;02;25;27
events in 32 different sports.
00;02;26;13 - 00;02;29;18
206 nations will be sending
00;02;29;18 - 00;02;32;18
at least one
athlete to the games for a total of.
00;02;32;20 - 00;02;39;11
Get this 10,672 athletes. Wow.
00;02;39;22 - 00;02;42;22
That is a lot of talent in one place.
00;02;43;04 - 00;02;46;20
And then after the games are finished in
mid-August, all of the Olympic facilities
00;02;46;20 - 00;02;51;18
will be spruced up for the Paralympic
Games, which begin August 28th.
00;02;51;28 - 00;02;54;09
So it's a sporty summer in France.
00;02;54;09 - 00;02;57;16
How do you say
stinky sweat socks and French?
00;02;59;25 - 00;03;02;20
If you check out the show notes,
you can shoot me a text.
00;03;02;20 - 00;03;05;20
Let me know if what you're looking forward
to in this year's Summer Olympics.
00;03;12;04 - 00;03;13;22
While we're talking about the Olympics,
00;03;13;22 - 00;03;19;26
it was on this day at the Stockholm
Olympics in 1912, that one of the greatest
00;03;19;26 - 00;03;25;07
American athletes ever, Jim Thorpe, won
the gold medal in the decathlon.
00;03;25;22 - 00;03;29;29
The decathlon is ten track
and field events that are put together.
00;03;30;14 - 00;03;32;12
The 100 meter sprint.
00;03;32;12 - 00;03;35;17
The long jump Shotput high jump
00;03;35;23 - 00;03;40;25
400 meter sprint, discus
which is like a very heavy frisbee,
00;03;41;15 - 00;03;44;23
110 meter hurdles, pole vault, javelin,
00;03;44;23 - 00;03;47;23
and the 1500 meter run.
00;03;48;08 - 00;03;52;22
So what makes the victory even more
amazing is that this was the first time
00;03;52;22 - 00;03;57;03
decathlon was held in the modern Olympics,
so no one really had a way
00;03;57;03 - 00;03;58;22
to train for it.
00;03;58;22 - 00;04;01;12
And Jim Thorpe hadn't done any track
00;04;01;12 - 00;04;04;21
and field training
for the two years before 1912.
00;04;04;22 - 00;04;06;08
He was too focused on other stuff.
00;04;07;14 - 00;04;10;14
The event was held over a weekend
from Saturday to Monday.
00;04;10;29 - 00;04;13;19
Just like this year in 1912, the last day,
00;04;13;19 - 00;04;16;19
which was Monday, was July 15th.
00;04;17;13 - 00;04;21;27
Jim Thorpe didn't win each of the ten
events, but he did come close.
00;04;21;28 - 00;04;24;28
He never finished further back
than fourth place,
00;04;25;00 - 00;04;28;18
and his overall score
really trounced the competition.
00;04;28;19 - 00;04;32;18
He set a world record that stood
for the next 36 years.
00;04;33;09 - 00;04;36;16
Jim Thorpe was born in 1887
00;04;36;16 - 00;04;40;06
or maybe 1888, in what is now Oklahoma.
00;04;40;06 - 00;04;42;20
But back then
it was called Indian Territory.
00;04;42;20 - 00;04;44;10
It wasn't a state yet.
00;04;44;10 - 00;04;46;25
He was a member of the second Fox tribe.
00;04;46;25 - 00;04;52;00
Even as a kid, he was an athlete,
and one of his coaches was Pop Warner,
00;04;52;00 - 00;04;55;07
who we know today
as a historic football coach
00;04;55;07 - 00;04;58;07
and the namesake of the Pop Warner
Football League.
00;04;59;03 - 00;05;02;09
Now, Jim Thorpe was not just a great track
and field athlete.
00;05;02;19 - 00;05;05;27
He was a standout in football and baseball
00;05;06;09 - 00;05;11;05
and basketball
and lacrosse and ballroom dancing.
00;05;11;20 - 00;05;16;02
Yes, ballroom dancing, which,
if you've never tried it, it's not easy.
00;05;16;06 - 00;05;21;06
And Jim Thorpe was a champion dancer,
but football was his favorite.
00;05;21;18 - 00;05;24;06
After the Olympics were over,
he went home to a ticker
00;05;24;06 - 00;05;27;06
tape parade down
Broadway in New York City.
00;05;27;13 - 00;05;30;13
And he said,
I heard people yelling my name,
00;05;30;17 - 00;05;34;22
and I couldn't realize how one fellow
could have so many friends.
00;05;35;05 - 00;05;38;07
Well, I guess you get that many friends
when you inspire the entire country.
00;05;38;15 - 00;05;41;18
And Jim Thorpe is still an inspiration.
00;05;48;24 - 00;05;49;01
All right.
00;05;49;01 - 00;05;50;05
It's riddle time.
00;05;50;05 - 00;05;52;04
The riddle last Monday was.
00;05;52;04 - 00;05;54;07
I have a neck, but no head.
00;05;54;07 - 00;05;56;19
I have two arms, but no hands.
00;05;56;19 - 00;05;58;00
What am I?
00;05;58;00 - 00;05;59;14
The answer.
00;05;59;14 - 00;06;01;28
A shirt.
00;06;01;28 - 00;06;03;10
Today's riddle is.
00;06;03;10 - 00;06;07;06
What kind of tree
can you carry in your hand?
00;06;07;28 - 00;06;12;00
What kind of tree
can you carry in your hand?
00;06;12;24 - 00;06;15;19
Give you the answer on Wednesday.
00;06;15;19 - 00;06;18;19
I hope I missed a couple of shows
last week.
00;06;18;27 - 00;06;20;14
I had a really bad cold.
00;06;20;14 - 00;06;23;21
Sometimes people say that summer colds
are worse than winter colds.
00;06;24;10 - 00;06;26;24
There may actually be some truth to that.
00;06;26;24 - 00;06;30;21
Colds in the winter
time are usually caused by rhinovirus.
00;06;30;22 - 00;06;36;25
While summer colds are often caused
by an enterovirus and can in rare cases
00;06;36;25 - 00;06;41;12
actually lead to more severe symptoms
than rhinovirus usually does.
00;06;42;02 - 00;06;45;06
In the summertime, you may also be dealing
with more allergies
00;06;45;06 - 00;06;48;06
than you do in the winter,
which can make your symptoms worse.
00;06;48;21 - 00;06;52;26
one symptom we all deal with
when you have a cold is congestion.
00;06;53;19 - 00;06;55;10
I certainly went through that last week.
00;06;55;10 - 00;06;57;02
Your nose is runny all the time.
00;06;57;02 - 00;06;58;21
You're sniffing, you're sneezing,
00;07;00;06 - 00;07;01;00
Your nose is
00;07;01;00 - 00;07;04;19
actually the front lines of your body's
defenses against infection.
00;07;04;22 - 00;07;08;10
All the hairs and things inside your nose
are there to trap germs.
00;07;08;12 - 00;07;11;13
And then when you sneeze
or blow your nose, it's like
00;07;11;13 - 00;07;13;08
hitting the ejection seat.
00;07;13;08 - 00;07;15;09
You blow them right out.
00;07;15;09 - 00;07;19;15
But if germs get past the defenses,
then the special tissues
00;07;19;15 - 00;07;23;12
inside your nose not like the tissue
you blow your nose into.
00;07;23;12 - 00;07;25;27
That's the tissue
that's part of your body.
00;07;25;27 - 00;07;30;21
Those tissues swell up, and that makes it
harder to breathe through your nose.
00;07;31;11 - 00;07;34;17
And your body says
flush out the intruders,
00;07;35;03 - 00;07;39;18
that's when it tries
to kind of wash out the germs with, well,
00;07;39;18 - 00;07;43;20
there's no really nice way to put this,
but it's with snot.
00;07;43;27 - 00;07;45;19
Grow.
00;07;45;19 - 00;07;48;04
So between the swelling and the flood,
00;07;48;04 - 00;07;51;17
there can be very little room for air
to get through.
00;07;52;04 - 00;07;55;04
And voila, you have a stuffy nose.
00;07;55;10 - 00;07;58;09
By the way, do you know what a runny nose
is officially called?
00;07;58;27 - 00;08;00;20
Rhino. Ria.
00;08;00;20 - 00;08;03;07
Rhino is something that has to do
with your nose.
00;08;03;07 - 00;08;08;00
And Ria is a flow of something
or a discharge.
00;08;08;16 - 00;08;10;03
So if you have a rhino ria
00;08;10;03 - 00;08;13;14
or a runny nose,
it's important that you drink enough water
00;08;13;27 - 00;08;18;03
because your body is doing the right thing
and trying to flush out that infection.
00;08;18;15 - 00;08;19;11
So give it a hand.
00;08;20;10 - 00;08;21;29
And the
weather today, it's going to be hot
00;08;21;29 - 00;08;25;10
in the middle of the country
and along the Mid-Atlantic coast.
00;08;25;20 - 00;08;28;20
Looks like a lot of rain
around the country today too.
00;08;29;02 - 00;08;32;02
Some of those storms
could get pretty energetic this afternoon.
00;08;36;27 - 00;08;38;08
All right, that's the show.
00;08;38;08 - 00;08;41;05
Thank you very much for listening.
00;08;41;05 - 00;08;43;05
And remember. Check out the show notes.
00;08;43;05 - 00;08;46;14
Send me a text about what you want to see
in this year's Summer Olympics.
00;08;47;13 - 00;08;50;13
I'll be back Wednesday
and I hope you are too.
00;08;50;19 - 00;08;52;18
From the came in the newsroom.
00;08;52;18 - 00;08;54;15
This is Alex signing off.
